Great news for Dancing With The Stars (DWTS) fans who miss OG host, Tom Bergeron. After five years of being away, he’ll return as a guest judge during the Tuesday, November 11 episode, where the reality TV series celebrates 20 years on the air.
Tom Bergeron Comments On Comeback
Commenting on his DWTH return, Bergeron told Good Morning America, “It feels really good. I’m really looking forward to it.”
Bergeron was the original host of DWST since it premiered in 2005. He left the show in 2020 in Season 28, after he publicly criticized contestant Sean Spicer, President Donald Trump’s former White House Press Secretary.
During a podcast with DWTS alum, Cheryl Burke, Bergeron told her about the situation that led to his exit. He noted in the summer of 2019 that he had two lunches with the showrunner, stating that as Season 28 was on the “threshold to an election year in America” and the country was divided, he advised against anyone from any party participating on the series.
About a month later, they informed him that Trump’s former press secretary was chosen as a contestant. It upset him, so he released a statement criticizing Spicer being added to the show.
He noted during Burke’s podcast that he, “…did not name anybody,” or a political party. He just said, “I was told certain things when I was asked my opinion, they agreed, and now they’ve thrown a curveball.”
Bergeron went on to say, “I even went so far as to say it’s their right to do that. They’re the producers of the show; if that’s what they want to do, they are entitled to do that. We will have to agree to disagree.”
Bergeron noted from that point on, he knew it would be his last season with DWTS, “… because of that one betrayal.”
DWTS Has Had Many Hosts Since
Bergeron offered to take a break for Season 28, and the show’s producers allowed him out of his contract.
Co-host Erin Andrews exited after that season, and Tyra Banks replaced both co-hosts for Season 29. Three years later, Banks exited, and current co-hosts Julianne Hough and Alfonso Ribeiro came in and have been at the forefront of the show since.
