Mayor Merinac was taken to the hospital. He left behind instructions that nothing was to happen without his say so. Not that the sick man was to blame for tornado heading to town. It was a freak of nature and it happened whether anyone was going to sound the alarm or not. Nancy ensured that the alarm went out. She did her best to protect her community. She may have broken the law in doing so, but no one was going to be upset that they got a warning about a tornado about to hit their homes.
Nancy was a hero! Many heroes rose on this occasion. They protected their homes, their churches, their restaurants, and their schools. Nancy for one didn’t just stop at the alarm. She went out into the storm. She made sure to find people that were ignoring the sirens. She made sure to get them to safety. She normally would have gotten help from the Mayor’s office if not the mayor himself and unfortunately they were lost without Mayor Merinac. He hadn’t even wanted to tell anyone that he had a heart attack.
The mayor thought it would make him look weak. Some people have a little too much pride for their own good. This included the man known as Mr. Chicken. He was in town to check up on Frank and he got stuck there in the storm. He got lucky because he ran into Nancy. Nancy was looking for her son. She found Mr. Chicken. She reminded him that he might meet his maker if he didn’t stop being a jerk by stealing family recipes. Only Wyatt told her more than he normally would. He unburdened his sould by spilling everything. He said he wasn’t from the South. He was from Vermont.
Wyatt also wears a topee. The Cluckery was filing for bankruptcy. It was all coming to an end. He swindled the family recipe out of her son because it was their only hope to keep the doors open. Nancy couldn’t believe the audacity of this man. She was going to leave him at that stupid restaurant while she continued her search for Frank and Wyatt was so scared about being alone that he just tagged along until he got somewhere safe. Her son meanwhile went home. He checked on his family. He ran into his soon to be ex-mother-in-law.
Gus needed help getting to the cellar. Frank helped her. He sometimes remembers he’s Nancy’s son. It happens every blue moon and the good thing is that it does happen. He saved Gus. The tree that Nancy was always worried about had crashed into her room. Nancy warned her late husband about that tree for over twenty years. He never cut it even when he should have. Now, it’s crashed into the house. It could have killed Gus. Gus should be thankful for Frank and she wasn’t because she remembered all the wrong he did.
Frank didn’t just treat her daughter wrong. He treated everyone horribly. This included his own mother. He asked about her when they got to the cellar. It was like pulling teeth from Gus but she ultimately admitted that Nancy sounded the alarm. Frank grew even more worried that his mom was out in the storm. He was worried about and she was worried about him. Frank originally went outside to find Amanda. Amanda had recently served him with divorce papers. She told him for months that it was coming. Still, when it actually happened, it had scared him.
Frank didn’t want to lose his marriage. He loves her in his own way. He took her for granted. He treated his own mom like she was only there to serve him and he still loved the both of them. Frank didn’t know it was too late to save his marriage. He had his chance to fight for Amanda. It came and went. Amanda was already moving on. She tried to do so with others. There were plenty of good guys interested and the only one that Amanda cared about was Sergio. Sergio got her in a way no one else ever had.
Amanda had thought what she had with Frank was special when she really she stayed for Nancy. First, it was to have such a caring mom like Nancy. Then it was for their daughter Frankie. Frankie was older now. She was soon off to school. Amanda didn’t have stick around for her and so she stayed for Nancy. She loved having Nancy as a mother-in-law. She didn’t want to lose her. She finally left Frank because Nancy told Amanda that she would never lose her. Nancy was a good woman. She was full of kindness and empathy.
Nancy saved a father trapped with his baby in the car. She rescued them and she kept looking for her son. She eventually found his car flipped over. He wasn’t inside. He was last seen running down Main Street. Once Nancy knew he was safe, she sought safety. The same with Mae. Mae nearly called off her wedding because of this supposed Mimi’s curse. Mimi got pregnant and abandoned twice. The same for her daughter and granddaughter and great-granddaughter. Mae had been worried and it was because she thought Jay would abandon her. Its because she thought she was like the unknowns.
Mae was worried she was like all the men that ran off. She ran off when she left high school. She lied to Jay about her past. Jay forgave her and she doesn’t think she’s worthy of him because she thinks she takes after Clayton. Clayton abandoning her a second time had reopened an old wound. Only Jay told her he was sticking around for good. He wasn’t going to leave and she couldn’t escape him if she tried. They hunkered down in Gus’s cellar. Amanda stayed with Sergio at the restaurant. And Nancy returned home to find both Gus and Frank okay.
Frank apologized to his mother for his behavior. He loves her. He wanted her to know that. He didn’t even correct her that it was Frank now and not Frank Jr. The tornado it seems took a toll on Merinac, but it brought people together and Nancy led the way.
