Los Angeles Dodgers fans were left wondering why relief pitcher Alex Vesia was mysteriously not seen in the World Series for quite some time. Well, now they know the reason and it seems totally heartbreaking. Read on for all the details.

The Death Of A Baby

NBCLA covered the announcement this weekend and shared that relief pitcher Alex Vesia and wife Kayla both posted on social media. Sadly, the unfortunate news came of the passing of their infant daughter.

According to the report, the couple’s daughter Sterling Soul Vesia died on October 26th. In a very touching Instagram post, the family wrote “Our little angel, we love you forever and you are always with us.”

Later, they added a very relatable statement for any parent, “We have no words for the enormous pain that we are going through, but we love holding her close and remembering every moment that we shared with her.”

Death During The Series

The irreplaceable loss was in between games two and three of the Dodgers vs. Blue Jays series. While keeping it from the eyes of the world, the report disclosed that people behind the scenes in the Dodgers organization and those close to the players knew about it.

Respectfully, they chose to honor the family’s privacy during their terrible time. NBC Sports reporter Michael Duarte, who was emotionally affected by the news, talked about how the team reacted. “It’s just heartbreaking. It’s absolutely brutal,” he said.

Support For The Family

He also talked about how the Vesias’ support was freely given. “It was extremely important and very nice of the Dodgers to give them the space they needed and thereby enabled them to mourn and come to terms with this tragedy by themselves,” he said.

The sports world wasn’t long in coming with its support for the father and mother in grief. Teammate and pitcher, Blake Snell, used the web to share his prayers and well wishes.

Charity Donations

Meanwhile, a strong statement of unity was made when a large number of Dodgers players had Alex Vesia’s jersey “number, 51,” printed on their headgear. Correspondent Macy Jenkins said that the respectful act continued on the field.

Some “Toronto Blue Jays” players chose to wear the number on their backs as well. Plus, fans and people close to the organization have already put together donations totaling tens of thousands of dollars. The money goes to “the SickKids charity in Canada.”

While the squad was busy with their festivities, Duarte let the bullpens’ secret out, and the majority of the bullpen players texted Vesia saying their game was “for you.”

Baseball Fans React

The comments section filled up with hundreds of tributes and praise for the teams. One person wrote, “Kudos to the Blue Jays bullpen pitchers that solidarized with their Dodgers opponent by wearing #51 in their caps, beautiful gesture, condolences to the Vesia family.”
