With the fall television slate officially less than a month away from premiering, CBS is offering its best look yet at the life of Morena Baccarin's small-town Sheriff Mickey Fox. A new full trailer for the Fire Country spin-off, Sheriff Country, was released today, teasing the problems she encounters as the face of law enforcement in Edgewater, where crime is on the rise, and she's the person everyone turns to. She also has to balance her job with the stresses of being a single mother with a daughter, Skye, who appears to be heading down the wrong path. It's just a taste of what's to come when Mickey's first shift begins on October 17.
The footage opens with Mickey immediately facing danger on the job, with a rifle round greeting her when she knocks on a door. Despite working in the sheriff's department for 20 years, Edgewater doesn't trust her leadership right now, and she still feels like "for some people, I'll always be that girl from the wrong neighborhood." Also involved in her life is her weed-farming ex-con father, whom she calls upon to help with her daughter. Skye struggles with her mental health and has been dating a boyfriend Mickey believes is an even worse influence than her father, and, with a rise in burglaries and other violent crimes, she could really use a hand. One thing that's clear is that she's more than ready to lay down the law and remind everyone that she's a "damn good sheriff," while also understanding that, sometimes, the law isn't black and white.
Sheriff Country will feature a case-of-the-week format that expands Edgewater and shows the darker side of the town seen in the Max Thieriot firefighting procedural. There is a bigger overarching mystery teased in the trailer, however. One shot sees Skye's new boyfriend lying dead in a pool of blood, an incident that will surely rock the town and create further pressure on Mickey to bring down the law. That whodunnit will unfold over the 20-episode inaugural run alongside everything else in Mickey's complicated life. Despite everything she's caught between, the sheriff still has time to dabble in some steamy romance that will blur the line between her personal and professional lives.
'Sheriff Country' Will Tie Heavily Into the Story of 'Fire Country'
First introduced as a backdoor pilot, the ambitious new show from creator Matt Lopez and executive produced by the original series' trio of Thieriot, Tony Phelan, and Joan Rater will remain closely tied to its flagship counterpart. Alongside a cast that features W. Earl Brown, Michele Weaver, Amanda Arcuri, Matt Lauria, and Christopher Gorham, there will be cameos from the Fire Country staff, including Thieriot's Bode himself. During a CBS press conference to promote the upcoming fall lineup, Thieriot opened up a bit about how he'll factor into Baccarin's story and expand the world in a way that hasn't been possible in the firefighting hit.
"We have some really big crossovers coming your way. In fact, my buddy W. Earl Brown [who plays Mickey's father Wes] over here is with me in Vancouver right now, I'm shooting Episode 5, and I just can't wait to see, can't wait for all the fans to see how this storyline intertwines with the rest of the world we're building. It's going to open up some really, really exciting possibilities, some really fun stuff across both shows and a lot of things we haven't explored yet, so can't wait to share all of that with you."
Sheriff Country premieres on Friday, October 17 at 9 p.m. ET. Check out the trailer in the player above.
