Right after Meghan Markle returned from her fashion stunt in Paris, she packed for a journey to New York. She and Prince Harry went to collect what one commentator called “yet another meaningless award.” And, some folks think there’s nothing humanitarian that motivates the controversial couple.

Are They Real Humanitarians?

On Wednesday on his Daily News Headlines vlog, royal commentator Neil Sean suggested that people might question their real reasons for going. They seem like humanitarians, but a closer look tells a different story.

As he put it, when you “scratch the surface” you see “how clear it truly is that Megan and Harry, well, they are humanitarians, but all for themselves, so it appears.”

Critics see these events as a way for the couple to stay in the news rather than getting any honor for their charitable work. In fact, a sector of the audience might feel that it’s more about building their celebrity brand than making a true difference.

Calculated For Attention

Neil pointed out that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex “jet off” to expensive cities, which costs a lot. Notably, that only puts a spotlight on their spending while they talk about helping others.

In the royal commentator’s opinion, Meghan Markle and Harry’s actions seem to be about keeping their fame alive. And, the perception can be made that every public move is calculated for attention.

Actually, their New York visit simply looks like another step in a plan to stay relevant. The award they get seems to be just another part of that plan. So, Sean concluded that their work often comes across as being for their own benefit, not for true charity.

Royal Family Fans React

Admittedly, some of the work that Prince Harry does results in better times for some kids: notably, the WellChild charity. However, any celebrity could probably do the same, if not more. So, one critic wrote:

There is NOTHING to honor them for. As a New Yorker, I’m angry that they’re here right now interfering with our own much needed security. They’re an utter disgrace!

Here are a few more responses from the discussion area:

The Old New York Visit

The comments about the New York police of course, brings to mind the memories of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry claiming they were chased for “two hours across the mean streets of Manhattan.”

However, “the NYPD, the New York City Police Department, couldn’t quite work out exactly where this was, and consequently…closed down the case.”

What are your thoughts on Meghan Markle and Prince Harry getting humanitarian awards? Do you think that they really aren’t humanitarians and are more interested in polishing their own fame?
