More than half a century after Neil Armstrong took that “giant leap for mankind,” Kim Kardashian isn’t entirely convinced that leap ever happened.
On the latest episode of The Kardashians (Oct. 29), the reality star opened up about one of her favorite pastimes — diving deep into conspiracy theories. In fact, she’s so invested that she regularly sends links and articles to her All’s Fair costar, Sarah Paulson. One recent topic? The idea that the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing might have been staged.
“I think it didn’t happen,” Kim confessed to Sarah, later reaffirming in her confessional, “I think it was fake.”
Kim Kardashian’s “Evidence” and the Internet’s Influence
When it comes to evidence, Kim pointed straight to Buzz Aldrin — the second man to walk on the moon after Neil Armstrong. “I’ve seen a few videos on Buzz Aldrin talking about how it didn’t happen,” she explained. “He says it all the time now in interviews. Maybe we should find Buzz Aldrin.”
Half-joking, she even suggested her sister Khloé invite the 95-year-old astronaut onto her Khloé in Wonderland podcast. From there, Kim rattled off a few of the classic claims that have fueled the moon-landing hoax theory for decades.
“Why does Buzz Aldrin say it didn’t happen? There’s no gravity on the moon,” she mused. “Why is the flag blowing? The shoes that they have in the museum that they wore on the moon is a different print in the photos. Why are there no stars?”
And if anyone thinks she’s gone off the deep end for entertaining the idea, Kim isn’t losing sleep over it. “They’re going to say I’m crazy no matter what,” she said, unfazed. “But go to TikTok, see for yourself.”
The Long Shadow of the Moon Landing Conspiracy
Theories claiming that the moon landing was faked have been orbiting pop culture for decades. One of the most persistent versions even credits 2001: A Space Odyssey director Stanley Kubrick with helping NASA stage the footage on a Hollywood set.
As for the supposed “proof” involving Buzz Aldrin, it traces back to a 2000 interview on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. During the conversation, when Conan recalled watching Neil and Buzz land on the moon, Aldrin replied that he “didn’t,” explaining there “wasn’t any television” and “there wasn’t anybody taking the picture.”
That remark, taken out of context, has since been used as “evidence” by conspiracy theorists. But as Reuters clarified in a 2022 fact-check, Aldrin was merely describing how the footage people saw back then was a simulated animation — not live broadcast — since cameras couldn’t capture the moment in real time.
