Grey’s Anatomy spoilers and updates reveal Jesse Williams is returning as Dr. Jackson Avery-at least for a guest spot. He’ll reprise his role of the beloved surgeon in the Thursday, October 30 episode.
A Promo Announced The Guest Shot
Grey’s Anatomy announced in a promo for the upcoming fourth episode of season 22 that Jesse Williams, the actor playing the beloved surgeon since 2009, will come back for a guest role.
He’ll show up at Grey Sloan in the episode airing Thursday, Oct. 30. In the promo, released after the Thursday, Oct. 23 episode of Grey’s, Jackson is seen walking alongside Ben Warren (Jason George).
He’s welcomed by several other doctors at Grey Sloan as he makes his comeback; however, Jackson’s return was not mentioned in the logline for the next episode, titled “Goodbye Horses.”
The official synopsis states, “The interns handle a strange trauma, while a complicated breast reconstruction puts Meredith in a tense partnership.”
The Character Was A Regular For Twelve Seasons
Williams’ character was a staple on the series for an impressive 12 seasons until he made his exit in 2021 during the 17th season.
However, he returned for guest appearances on the show three times in the subsequent years-his final appearance occurred during the 21st season.
In September, he had a conversation with PEOPLE where he discussed his role as Jackson Avery, particularly focusing on how this long-standing character contrasts with his current role.
He plays former U.S. Marine-turned-fixer, Daniel De Luca, in Hotel Costiera, which debuted last month on Prime Video. At that time, Williams, who is now 44 years old, humorously remarked that the well-known neurosurgeon has “definitely undergone a lot more therapy.”
Jackson Describes His Hotel Costiera Character
Williams remarked on Jackson, saying, “He appears to be significantly more emotionally stable, engaged, and self-aware now. Daniel De Luca is in the process of discovering his path; it seems to me that he is taking baby steps before he can truly walk.
Having spent such an extensive period in the military, he has struggled to adapt to civilian life, lacking the structure and sense of purpose that those missions provided.
This has left him feeling somewhat adrift, which is quite a contrast to the life of a successful surgeon who is adept at managing tasks and overseeing a hospital.” It does seem like quite the change from his previous character on Grey’s Anatomy.
Williams Makes A Comeback As Jackson As Amelia Shepherd Leaves
Williams is making a comeback as Jackson in the Grey’s universe just as Caterina Scorsone, who has portrayed Dr. Amelia Shepherd since the seventh season, has decided to take a break. This, after the second episode of this season aired on October 16.
During that episode, it was disclosed that Amelia would be stepping away for a sabbatical. This was after learning that the mother of her patient, Dylan (Sophia Kopera), was the one responsible for an explosion that tragically resulted in the death of Dr. Monica Beltran (Natalie Morales).
Williams Was Forever Grateful For His Previous Time On The Show
After departing from Grey’s Anatomy in 2021, Williams expressed in a statement to PEOPLE that he would be “forever grateful” for his experiences on the show and its “limitless” opportunities.
“As an actor, director, and individual, I have been incredibly fortunate to learn so much from so many, and I thank our wonderful fans. They infuse so much energy and appreciation into our shared worlds,” he stated.
“The journey and resilience gained from creating nearly 300 hours of leading global television is a gift I will always cherish,” he continued. “I am extremely proud of our work, our influence, and to be progressing with so many resources, opportunities, allies, and dear friends.”
