General Hospital Speculation! Is Nathan West REALLY Back? Or Is It His EVIL TWIN? A Faison IMPOSTOR? Or the Result of a BRAINWASHING Experiment?

By John Hernandez 11/01/2025

NATHAN WEST RETURNS TO GENERAL HOSPITAL SEVEN YEARS AFTER DYING—BUT IS IT REALLY HIM OR AN EVIL TWIN, PETER AUGUST IN DISGUISE, OR A BRAINWASHED CLONE?!

TL;DR: Nathan West returned to Port Charles in September 2025—seven years after dying in Maxie Jones’ arms—and NOBODY knows what to believe on General Hospital anymore! DNA and fingerprints confirm it’s him, but his sister Britt Westbourne reacted with suspicion instead of joy. One reason is that he claims to have no memory of the past seven years. So, fans are convinced this is either an evil twin, his half-brother Peter August in disguise, a Cesar Faison clone experiment, or a brainwashed Nathan. Port Charles is about to EXPLODE!

Nathan West Is Back From The Dead (But Is It Really Him?)

Ryan Paevey returned to General Hospital this fall, reprising his role as Nathan West—the heroic detective who was shot and killed by his father, Cesar Faison (Anders Hove) in January 2018. Back then, Nathan died protecting Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms) from Faison’s bullet, leaving behind a devastated widow and their unborn son, James West.

Now he’s BACK, discovered after a car accident, with DNA and fingerprints confirming his identity. He woke up in a hospital be,d claiming he somehow survived being shot, but he has NO memory of the past seven years. How convenient, right?

The man looks like Nathan. He sounds like Nathan. The science says he IS Nathan. But when his sister Britt Westbourne (Kelly Thiebaud)—who also miraculously returned from the dead after being stabbed by Heather “The Hook” Webber—saw him, she didn’t react with joy. She looked SHADY and suspicious, like she knows something nobody else does.

Britt neither happily embraced her brother nor looked excited to see him. She’s been working on mysterious secret research for an unnamed boss at The Five Poppies resort in Croatia, and fans are convinced her project is connected to Nathan’s return. Whatever she knows, she’s NOT sharing it.

Let’s examine the possibilities:

Theory #1: He’s An Evil Twin

This is classic soap opera territory: Nathan had a secret twin brother that nobody knew about! Perhaps Cesar Faison hid one of the twins as part of a twisted scheme. Maybe Dr. Liesl Obrecht (Kathleen Gati) gave birth to twins and only knew about one baby.

Only 7% of fans believe this theory, according to Soap Opera Digest’s poll, but it would explain why this man has Nathan’s face and DNA but feels OFF to Britt. An evil twin wouldn’t have Nathan’s memories or personality—he’d just have his genetics and appearance.

For Liesl Obrecht, who’s already dealing with legal troubles, the appearance of another son would be both a miracle and a nightmare. Could she have given birth to twins without knowing? The woman who’s survived everything from supervillain exes to fake deaths would face her greatest challenge yet.

Theory #2: It’s Peter August In Disguise

Peter August (Wes Ramsey)—Nathan’s half-brother and Faison’s other son—was last seen lying in the snow after Felicia Scorpio (Kristina Wagner) bludgeoned him to protect Maxie. Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) sat and watched him die to confirm he was actually dead. But his brain never left his body, which, in soap opera logic, means he could come back!

This theory got 14% of fan votes. The idea is that Peter somehow survived, underwent plastic surgery to look like Nathan, and had his DNA and fingerprints manipulated through Britt’s secret lab work. It’s DRASTIC, but this is General Hospital, so nothing is too outrageous!

Peter always hated Britt and tried to kill her multiple times. That would explain why she’s disturbed by this “Nathan’s” return—she recognizes her psychotic half-brother behind her dead brother’s face. Britt mentioned that Maxie doesn’t want James to meet Nathan without her present, which makes sense if Maxie might be in danger from Peter in disguise.

Theory #3: Cesar Faison Is Behind Everything

Another 7% of fans think this man is actually Cesar Faison himself, back from the dead. As longtime viewers know, Faison is NO stranger to disguises. He once used a high-tech mask to pose as Duke Lavery. And remember that Faison’s brain was extracted from his body during his autopsy after he died in 2018 and was jarred for scientific purposes. Pretty tough to grow a human out of a brain in a jar!

However, in the world of soap operas, not even having your brain in a jar means you’re permanently dead! The initial “C” on the card with Britt’s medication points to Cesar Faison as her mystery boss. Britt told someone that her boss wouldn’t want her hurt, and Peter’s known animosity toward Britt makes him an unlikely protector—but Faison might actually care about keeping his daughter alive.

The GH head writers teased that “The Faison/Obrecht clan is just getting started,” which strongly hints that Faison or Peter (or BOTH) are coming back in some capacity. Maybe Faison orchestrated Nathan’s return as part of some elaborate posthumous plan.

Theory #4: He’s A Clone (The Most Popular Theory!)

This theory captured 19% of the fan vote. What if this Nathan is a CLONE created through Britt’s mysterious project in Croatia? General Hospital has already established that memories can be transferred—it was done when Drew Cain (then played by Billy Miller) first arrived in Port Charles, believing himself to be Jason Morgan (Steve Burton).

The ability to “memory-map” was pioneered by Dr. Andre Maddox as part of the Anemnesis Project—and guess who funded his research? CESAR FAISON! If Britt was blackmailed or forced to clone Nathan to receive her life-sustaining medication, that would explain her disturbed reaction to seeing him.

The question with a clone is whether “Nathan 2.0” is a stand-up guy like the original or if his arrival spells danger. Was he programmed with Nathan’s heroic personality, or is he a blank slate? Or worse—was he programmed to be a weapon?

Theory #5: He’s Brainwashed (THE WINNER!)

The MOST popular theory, winning 53% of fan votes, is that this IS the real Nathan West, but he’s been brainwashed. This would explain everything: He has Nathan’s DNA and fingerprints because he IS Nathan. He survived the shooting somehow (maybe Faison arranged for him to be secretly saved and kept alive). And, he has no memories ofthe seven years because they were wiped or suppressed through brainwashing.

Britt looks disturbed because she knows her brother has been experimented on and isn’t himself mentally, even though he’s physically alive. Maybe her mystery boss forced her to participate in the experiments, too, which would explain her guilt and reluctance to celebrate his return.

The amnesia claim could be a ploy to gain sympathy and avoid scrutiny for mistakes he makes. If Nathan was programmed with a mission—perhaps to infiltrate the PCPD or harm specific people—his “confusion” about the missing years gives him cover.

Why Maxie Jones Is The Key To Everything

Maxie Jones is currently in a COMA after suffering a heart attack, which is VERY convenient timing. If anyone would know immediately whether this man is the real Nathan, it would be Maxie—his wife, the mother of his child, the woman who watched him die in her arms.

She could look into his eyes and KNOW if something was wrong. She’d recognize if he were Peter pretending to be Nathan. She’d sense if he was brainwashed or fake. That’s why the writers put her in a coma—to delay the inevitable confrontation and keep the mystery going longer.

When Maxie wakes up and sees this man with Nathan’s face, her reaction will tell us EVERYTHING. If she embraces him with tears of joy, he’s probably real. If she recoils in horror or confusion, we’ll know something is VERY wrong.

Anna Devane’s Investigation

Anna Devane is starting to wonder if Cesar Faison is really dead. Her famous “spidey senses” are tingling, and she plans to investigate Britt and Nathan’s miraculous returns. Anna has dealt with Faison’s schemes for DECADES—if anyone can uncover the truth about Nathan’s return, it’s her.

We know the woman Jason Morgan brought to Port Charles is definitely Britt—”The Britch” is confirmed real. But there’s considerable skepticism about whether the man in that hospital bed is really Nathan. Anna’s investigation will be crucial in revealing what’s actually happening.

Wrapping Up a Whole Bunch of Theories! Let’s Recap

Nathan West’s return is one of the most mysterious and controversial storylines General Hospital has done in years. The fact that Britt didn’t react with joy—combined with his convenient amnesia—tells us something is WRONG, even if the DNA says he’s real.

Whether he’s an evil twin, Peter in disguise, a Faison-created clone, or the real Nathan who’s been brainwashed, OR something entirely different we haven’t thought of yet, one thing is certain: when Maxie wakes up and Anna finishes her investigation, Port Charles will never be the same. The Faison/Obrecht clan is just getting started, and we’re all buckling our seatbelts and getting ready for this WILD ride!
