Tragic news hit the entertainment industry last week when an award-winning songwriter, Brett James, passed away. So did his wife and stepdaughter. It came when the plane they were in crashed in North Carolina on Thursday last week. Read on for reactions and tributes.

The Plane Crash Killed All On Board

WSPA reported that Brett James, who penned the words to Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” was in a “Cirrus SR225.” The small aircraft was registered to Brett Cornelius. Authorities note that the flight started in Nashville, but later, it crashed “near Iotla Valley Elementary School in Franklin.”

While everyone was safe at the school, all three people aboard died, and this was confirmed by the North Carolina Highway Patrol. Brett James, Melody Carole of Brentwood, and Meryl Maxwell Wilson were not saveable.

When the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame confirmed the news on Facebook, many people felt devastated. The post came with a photo of Brett, and a caption that explained:

We mourn the untimely loss of Hall of Fame member Brett James (“Jesus Take The Wheel” / “When The Sun Goes Down”), a 2020 inductee who was killed in a small-engine airplane crash on Sept. 18. He was 57.
