BREAKING Y&R Comings & Goings News: Ray Wise Is Bringing IAN WARD Back to Genoa City—And Mariah Should Be TERRIFIED

By Mike Thomas 10/16/2025

THE CULT LEADER FROM HELL RETURNS TO TORMENT MARIAH COPELAND JUST WHEN SHE THOUGHT SHE WAS SAFE

TL;DR: Ray Wise is returning to The Young and the Restless as the diabolical Ian Ward, and Mariah Copeland‘s about to have the worst day of her life. Ian—the cult leader who kidnapped, drugged, and forced Mariah into marriage—was supposedly killed by Victor Newman back in January 2025.

Except SURPRISE, he’s not dead! Ian gasped awake in the ambulance like a horror movie villain, and now he’s showing up at the Boston clinic where Tessa just visited. Mariah‘s worst nightmare is coming back on October 22nd, and this time she might not escape.

Quick Refresher: Ian Ward’s Greatest Hits (All Terrible)

For anyone who’s blocked out Ian Ward‘s reign of terror, let’s recap this man’s HORRENDOUS track record. Ian was a charismatic cult leader who seduced Nikki Newman decades ago, led her to believe he fathered her son Dylan McAvoy (spoiler: he didn’t, he’s sterile), extorted money from the Newmans, orchestrated the kidnapping of Sharon‘s newborn daughter Mariah, raised Mariah in his cult while her adoptive mother Helen Copeland abandoned her repeatedly, forced Mariah into marriage after drugging her and putting her in a wedding dress, and generally made everyone’s lives miserable for YEARS.

Oh, and he also worked with Adam Newman on the Paragon Project, escaped prison multiple times, held people hostage, started fires, and teamed up with Jordan Howard to frame Sharon for Heather Stevens‘ murder. You know, normal soap opera villain stuff taken to absolutely UNHINGED levels.

Ian was supposedly shot and killed by Victor at the Newman Ranch in January 2025 during a violent confrontation. Mariah even got closure, telling Ian‘s “dead” body that he didn’t beat her after all. Except the EMS pronounced him dead a little too quickly, because Ian woke up in the ambulance on the way to the morgue like some kind of unkillable cockroach. Because OF COURSE he did.

Why Ian Ward’s Return Is Mariah’s Worst Nightmare

Mariah Copeland has worked HARD to build a life away from Ian Ward‘s influence. She’s married to Tessa Porter, they have a daughter named Aria, and she has relationships with her biological mother , Sharon , and twin sister Cassie‘s memory. She’s built a family, a career, and most importantly—SAFETY.

But Ian has always been Mariah‘s monster under the bed. She told him before he “died” that she always had nightmares he would come back and ruin her life. And guess what? HE’S BACK TO DO EXACTLY THAT.

The fact that Soap Spoilers reports Ian‘s showing up at the Boston clinic where Tessa just visited is TERRIFYING. Is he tracking Tessa? Is he wanting to take Aria? Is he planning to kidnap Mariah again? Force her into another nightmare situation? The man already drugged her and forced her into marriage once—what’s stopping him from trying again?

Mariah‘s spent years healing from the trauma Ian inflicted. She’s built protective walls. She’s found happiness. And now the man who tortured her, the man who was her “hero” before she realized he was a monster, is coming back to destroy everything she’s built.

What Could Ian Want This Time?

Ian Ward doesn’t do anything without a twisted agenda, so what’s his play here? Let’s speculate on some absolutely horrifying possibilities:

He wants Mariah back under his control. Ian always saw Mariah as HIS—his project, his daughter figure, his possession. He raised her in his cult. He forced her into marriage. What if he’s coming back to reclaim her? To convince her that she belongs with HIM, not with Tessa and Sharon and her chosen family?

He’s targeting Aria. This is the DARKEST possibility but we have to consider it. Ian‘s already stolen one baby (Mariah from Sharon). What if he’s planning to kidnap Aria to force Mariah to come back to him? What if he wants to raise Aria in a cult like he raised Mariah?

He’s working with someone else. Ian‘s recent partnership with Jordan Howard ended badly, but that doesn’t mean he’s working alone now. What if he’s teamed up with another villain? What if there’s a bigger scheme at play and Mariah‘s just the entry point?

He wants revenge on the Newmans. Victor shot him. Nick and Sharon rescued Mariah from him. The Newman family has thwarted Ian‘s plans repeatedly. What if going after Mariah is really about hurting the Newmans?

Ray Wise: The Perfect Villain

Can we talk about how PERFECTLY Ray Wise plays this character? The man makes Ian Ward absolutely chilling. He can switch from charismatic and charming to terrifying and unhinged in seconds. When Ian‘s on screen, you FEEL the danger. You understand why people fall under his spell and why they’re terrified when they realize who he really is.

Wise has been keeping busy since his last Y&R appearance in January. He’s been in films, doing Twin Peaks meet-and-greets (where he played the iconic Leland Palmer), and now he’s bringing that same unsettling energy back to Genoa City.

His first airdate back is October 22, and Mariah‘s going to get a visit from him at that Boston clinic. The confrontation is going to be INTENSE.

What Happens When Mariah Sees Ian?

Mariah thought she was DONE with Ian Ward. She got her closure. She told him he didn’t win. She watched him die. And now he’s going to show up ALIVE at a medical clinic when she’s probably already stressed about whatever brought Tessa there in the first place?

Mariah‘s going to LOSE IT. And rightfully so! This is the man who tortured her, drugged her, forced her into marriage, and made her entire childhood a nightmare. Seeing him alive will be traumatizing on a level most people can’t comprehend.

Will Mariah run? Will she fight? Will she call for help? Will she freeze in terror? Whatever her reaction, it’s going to be heartbreaking to watch Camryn Grimes play this reunion because you KNOW she’s going to bring the emotional intensity.

The Bottom Line: Ian Ward Is Back and Nobody’s Safe

Ray Wise returning as Ian Ward is both exciting for drama purposes and absolutely TERRIFYING for Mariah Copeland‘s wellbeing. This man has caused immeasurable trauma, escaped death multiple times, and refuses to stay gone.

Mariah deserves peace. She deserves safety. She deserves to raise Aria with Tessa without looking over her shoulder. But this is The Young and the Restless, and peace is apparently not an option when Ian Ward‘s involved.

Welcome back to Genoa City, Ian. We hate you, but we’re also weirdly excited to see what chaos you’re about to unleash.
