GH HOT TAKE: Who Shot Drew Cain? And Why Should We Care When Nobody Else Does?

By Brian Hernandez 10/04/2025

DREW CAIN SHOT AND SUSPECT LIST IS MASSIVE

TL;DR: Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison) got shot twice on GH, and the suspect list is longer than a CVS receipt. Michael? Willow? Some random person we forgot existed? The real mystery isn’t who shot him – it’s why this storyline is falling flatter than Drew’s personality. We’re analyzing every suspect (spoiler: they all had good reasons), explaining why fans aren’t invested (hint: Drew is THE WORST), and asking: Is this really about Drew, or just an excuse to manufacture Quartermaine drama? Our money’s on the latter.

Drew Got Shot (And Nobody’s Sad About It)

On September 2, 2025, someone finally did what half of Port Charles has been threatening to do for months: they shot Drew Cain in the back. Twice. At close range. While he was standing in his own house, holding a drink and looking at the engagement ring he offered Willow Tait (Katelyn MacMullen).

The shooter remains a mystery. Drew never saw who fired the shots. Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali) and Kai Taylor (Jens Austin Astrup) were hiding in his bedroom when it happened – they heard the gunshots but didn’t see the shooter either. All we know is someone walked up behind Drew, shot him once, watched him fall, and then shot him AGAIN for good measure.

That’s some serious hatred right there. And honestly? Completely understandable given everything Drew has done.

The Suspect List Is Basically Everyone

When Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) asked Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna) how many people wanted Drew dead, his response was perfect: “That’s a long list.”

Not exactly subtle, but true, nonetheless.

Let’s break down the prime suspects:

Michael Corinthos (Rory Gibson): Drew slept with his wife Willow, destroyed his marriage, manipulated the custody case to take his children away, and constantly taunted him about it. Drew even told Michael he had evidence the judge was paid off – right before that judge turned up dead in the river. According to current spoilers, Michael’s desperately trying to “shore up his alibi,” which makes him look guilty as hell.

Willow Tait: She lost custody of her children partly because of Drew’s machinations. He betrayed her by sleeping with her mother Nina (Cynthia Watros). He promised to get her kids back, then Judge Heran turned up murdered, which destroyed Willow’s chance at reuniting with her children. Did she snap and decide Drew destroyed everything?

Carly Spencer (Laura Wright): She’s threatened to kill Drew TWICE. Once was in front of Gio Palmieri (Giovanni Mazza) and the other time was recently, when Drew threatened Michael. Mama Bear protecting her cub? Absolutely believable.

Nina Reeves: She blames Drew for damaging Willow, for manipulating her daughter, and for causing her breakdown. Nina even worked with Portia to drug Drew with ketamine to ruin his reputation. If that didn’t work, would she escalate to murder? Quite possibly.

Portia Robinson (Brook Kerr): Drew’s been blackmailing her for months over tampering with Heather Webber’s blood results. It almost cost her career, freedom, and marriage. She told Nina she feels “liberated” now. Is that because she finally took action?

Curtis Ashford (Donnell Turner): Drew backstabbed him over the Aurora CEO position, got his Aunt Stella brought up on insurance fraud charges, and has been making his life miserable. Curtis literally told Alexis that this won’t go away “unless Drew does.”

Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn): Drew served her with a restraining order keeping her away from her granddaughter Scout. Alexis has a lethal past (she killed someone before), and she’s protective of her family. Plus, she told Curtis that Drew’s “a monster now.”

Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard): He promised Alexis that Drew had made so many enemies someone would take him out. Did Sonny decide to expedite that process? He has alibis placing him elsewhere, but Sonny’s perfectly capable of hiring someone.

Why This Storyline Is Falling Flat

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: Nobody cares who shot Drew because nobody cares about Drew. The character has become so universally despised that fans are more interested in making sure the shooter DOESN’T get caught than in solving the mystery.

When a Soap Opera Digest poll asked fans who they thought shot Drew, a solid 27% voted for “Someone Else” – higher than any named character. That’s how little investment viewers have in this storyline. They’d rather it be a complete random than care about the actual suspects.

The problem isn’t the whodunit structure. GH has done excellent murder mysteries before. The problem is Drew. Cameron Mathison is a talented actor, but the writers have turned Drew Cain into such an insufferable, manipulative, hypocritical villain that there’s zero sympathy for him getting shot.

Compare this to classic GH mysteries like “Who killed Susan Moore?” or even recent ones like “Who attacked Ava?” Those worked because viewers were invested in the victim and wanted justice. With Drew, viewers want the shooter to sail into the sunset with nary a care in the world.

Is This Really About Drew or Quartermaine Drama?

Here’s our theory: This storyline isn’t actually about Drew at all. It’s about manufacturing drama around Monica Quartermaine’s death and will reading, creating conflict within the Quartermaine family, and giving Michael a dark storyline.

Drew getting shot happened right as Monica died (Leslie Charleson’s real-life passing made this storyline especially emotional). Now spoilers say Monica’s will is being read “with dramatic consequences,” a search warrant is being served, and Drew’s “on the warpath” accusing Michael.

This feels less like a genuine whodunit and more like a plot device to create Quartermaine chaos. Drew is the sacrificial lamb; he gets shot to generate suspects, drama, and family conflict. The actual mystery of who pulled the trigger feels secondary to all the interpersonal fallout.

Which is fine, honestly. If GH wants to use this as an excuse for meaty family drama, great. But let’s not pretend anyone’s tuning in desperately wondering if Drew survives. (Spoiler alert: He will. Cameron Mathison is still on contract.)

Drew’s Next Move: Framing Michael

Speaking of Drew surviving, he’s already plotting his revenge. According to spoilers and Cameron Mathison’s own interviews, Drew believes Michael shot him as part of an elaborate scheme involving Sonny, Sidwell, the dead judge, and planted evidence.

Drew’s theory: Michael shot him knowing police would search the house and find the wire transfer that makes Drew look guilty of bribing Judge Heran. This would exonerate Sonny and frame Drew in one fell swoop.

It’s actually a clever theory. Too bad it’s coming from Drew, who’s proven himself to be a manipulative liar. Even Martin Gray warned Drew he’d be committing perjury if he accuses Michael without proof.

But will that stop Drew? Of course not. He’s “on the warpath” this week, determined to take Michael down whether he actually did it or not.

The Bottom Line

In summary, one more time for good measure, Drew Cain got shot, and the list of suspects includes approximately everyone in Port Charles. The mystery should be compelling, but it’s falling flat because viewers just don’t care much. Nobody’s rooting for Drew. They’re actually rooting against him.

This storyline is really about Quartermaine family drama, Monica’s will, and Michael potentially going dark. Drew getting shot is just the catalyst. And honestly? That’s fine. Just don’t expect fans to care about solving the mystery when they’re all secretly cheering for whoever pulled the trigger.

General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC and streams on Hulu. Tune in to watch this mystery unfold. Or simply root for the wrong person.
