Pedro Arizpe shared insights into his creative process explaining that he aims for his comics to be both entertaining and thought-provoking. He noted Pure soapbox message comics don’t interest me, but I sometimes try to tap into something with some depth and substance. In my experience, however direct messages are boring and don’t land as effectively as when they are hidden deep inside an interesting entertaining presentation. This philosophy allows Pedro to weave deeper meanings into his work delivering messages in a more subtle and engaging way that resonates with readers.

We asked Pedro Arizpe if he remembered the first comic he ever created. He recalled, Yes it’s the first one on my website simply called PAC-MAN from 15 years ago. Many elements of what would become my style were already in place: observations on real-life incidents, what-if scenarios and exploring the surprising inner workings of things we often take for granted.
Pedro shared that while his early comics were made to entertain himself first it took a few more years before he could effectively communicate his ideas to readers. This is why many of my early comics while creative and original can often be confusing in terms of the message I was trying to convey he explained. Through time Pedro refined his approach balancing creativity with clarity in his storytelling.

Pedro Arizpe’s comics often feature different visual styles, so we asked him how he chooses the right approach for each one. Time is the biggest factor, he said. For longer comics, I often skip color or else it would take too long to finish. But sometimes color is necessary to set the tone and mood. Pedro also adjusts the visual style depending on the comic’s vibe whether it’s realistic, simple or highly stylized. Different styles suit different genres and using the wrong one can be distracting.
Looking back, Pedro mentioned that when he first started, he experimented with many styles which often meant spending over a week on each comic as he worked through trial and error. I don’t experiment as much now but if I have the time I’ll still throw in some creative flourishes here and there he added.
