Daniel Mok, the creator behind the Mokumentary comic series truly masters this art.
When asked to sum up his series in three words, Daniel said, Relatable random subtle adding I believe jokes are funniest when they’re rooted in reality. They become shared experiences. So, I focus on creating situations or characters that make people think, I’ve seen this happen in real life. Daniel further shared his thoughts on his approach. I enjoy jokes that aren’t too obvious. I want the reader to engage and think a bit, rewarding them when they catch the joke. It’s all about finding the right balance simple enough to understand, but not too literal or slapstick. As for the randomness, I love the flexibility to explore any topic or genre, without being restricted by specific characters or settings.

When asked about what inspired him to start creating comics Daniel Mok shared. I began drawing for fun around 2019 when I got my iPad. But it wasn’t until the Covid lockdown in 2021 that I started taking it seriously. One day, while driving to pick up takeout, I saw a food delivery person in a mask waiting at a traffic light. I snickered to myself and thought Haha, a masked rider. That’s when the idea struck for a series about childhood dreams being dashed wanting to be a Masked Rider but ending up as a masked rider. The series, ‘Don’t Let Your Dreams Become Memes ended up going viral and from there everything took off.

Daniel opened up about the sources of inspiration for his comic ideas A lot of my inspiration comes from observing moments of disappointment or frustration in life. Deep down, we all have a bit of a tendency to laugh at the misfortune of others.
