20 Adorably Awoo Silly Comics About Woodland Wolves by This Artist

With summer just around the corner, many of us are daydreaming about getting lost in nature. As a little teaser, we invite you to step into the world of Awoo Comics a delightful series by artist Andy Stuart that brings the woodland to life one silly wolf at a time. Unlike traditional takes on wolves, Awoo! Comics is filled with lighthearted, uplifting humor. Andy shared how creating these comics transformed his artistic approach: The Awoo! comics came after years of making more cynical things. Setting aside time each day to put my brain in a positive space and think about guileless, wholesome comic ideas is therapeutic in a way I could not have imagined. I’ve become a more mindful and gentler person from years of making these comics. And I guess that’s the essence of them, to me. Now and then, I’ll slip up with a cynical joke that jaded humorist is still within me but for the most part, the jokes aren’t about cruelty or cynicism just silliness and the best feelings in life.” Whether you need a smile or just love the charm of woodland creatures, these comics offer a heartwarming escape into a world of playful wolves, quirky humor, and pure joy.

To learn more about Awoo! Comics and the creative mind behind them, we took a deep dive into Andy Stuart’s artistic journey. Andy shared a bit about his background and how he got started in the world of comics: I began my career as a professional cartoonist as a staff illustrator at CollegeHumor in NYC, alongside many of the most talented people I’ve ever met. If you know of Drawfee, those were my co-workers! It was great. While I was there, I primarily worked on a series called Ben & Steph, though I did a good mix of other things as well. After his time at CollegeHumor, Andy went on to create two successful series for WEBTOON: Behind the GIFs and Elf & Warrior. Along the way, he dabbled in a variety of fun projects, including Your D&D Stories and Taterpig. These days, though, I’m mostly working on Awoo he shared. With a background rooted in humor, storytelling, and a love for the whimsical, Andy continues to bring joy to readers through his unique and heartfelt comics.

We were curious about what initially drew Andy Stuart to the world of cartooning. As it turns out, his passion for comics started at an early age. My dad is an illustrator, and my mom is a writer, so I guess you could say comics were the fusion of those things. But I think the biggest part of it was growing up reading a ton of Calvin & Hobbes and other short comics Andy shared. His love for the medium sparked when he was just six years old, though he never imagined it could become a full-time career. For years, he pursued other paths—until a bold decision in his mid-20s changed everything. I didn’t think it was going to be possible, and I didn’t pursue it seriously until my mid-20s when I quit my retail job and enrolled in art school. I dropped out after a year to take the job at CollegeHumor. That leap of faith led him to a thriving career in illustration and storytelling, bringing us the lighthearted and beloved Awoo! Comics today.

When it comes to crafting the charming and whimsical world of Awoo! Comics, Andy Stuart admits that his creative process isn’t always easy to define. I wish I could better convey my creative process because that might mean I understand what he shared. Sometimes the ideas just come to me. More often, I meditate on jokes and ideas while doing something that doesn’t require active attention driving a long way on the highway or taking a long walk—and get a lot of my writing done that way. Like many artists, Andy sometimes has to sit down and actively brainstorm, spending hours developing fresh ideas. He also explained how the process evolves. It’s a lot easier when the project is new, and every idea you have is valid and tenable. Once the identity of a project is more firmly established, you have constraints to work within, and it’s very easy to lean on jokes that are just about the characters. But that gets old fast. This thoughtful approach keeps Awoo! Comics are fresh and engaging, ensuring each strip maintains the playful and heartfelt energy fans have come to love.
